Meet one of our in-house Occupational Therapists, David

This week is Occupational Therapy Week, and to mark it we will be highlighting the invaluable work that our in house OT's do. We've already met Rachel and Helen, as well as our OTA Sharon.

Today, meet David!

Why did you choose Occupational Therapy as a career?

I was working with people with dementia when I first heard about occupational therapy. I wanted to learn about how to assist people to maintain their abilities and independence, and Occupational Therapy was an ideal match.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Being able to affect the lives of people in a positive way.

What do you enjoy most about working at NRS Healthcare?

Being able to directly contribute to the way services are designed and delivered by NRS, and working with motivated and experienced colleagues.

Describe a typical day at work?

I may be contacting people with daily living aids on loan from our service to confirm that these continue to meet their needs. Or I may be updating the information on the website about complex assistive equipment returned to our service so that health care professionals can re-issue these items effectively. Or I may be working with colleagues to develop and provide the Safe+Well service.

What advice would you offer someone considering a career in Occupational Therapy?

I would recommend that they get some practical experience of working with people who have difficulties with everyday activities before applying for the course. I found that this experience helped me to identify that I wanted a career in OT. The experience of providing support was also really valuable when studying OT. It helps you develop your communication skills and to be aware of the varied needs that your clients/patients will have.

When you are not at work, what do you get up to?

I go running and train with my running group every week, sometimes I’ll go kayaking on the River Cam when the weather is good. I also enjoy listening to music and going to concerts.
