Many elderly people missing out on osteoporosis checks due to ‘postcode lottery’

Hundreds of elderly people are thought to be missing out on crucial osteoporosis checks due to the widespread myth that it is normal for the older population to break bones when they fall.

The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) along with Age UK have published a ‘Falls and Fractures Declaration’ which they would like NHS trusts, councils and other organisations who work with elderly people to adopt and are calling for an end to the so called ‘postcode lottery of care’ which means some areas fail to regularly assess elderly patients for brittle bone disease.

Part of the declarations calls for local authorities to support the campaign which “discredits the myth that it is normal for older people to fall and break bones”, with Jane Cooper (NOS) highlighting that only a third of hospitals actually screen for osteoporosis with only two thirds screening for fall risks.

There are 300,000 bone fractures each year which are caused by underlying and often undetected bone fragility – with many cases costing the NHS a great deal due to surgery requirements and hospital stays.

Statistics from the NOS show that 40% of women and 20% of men over the age of 50 will fracture a bone at some point, with the main culprit linked to poor bone health.

“One in three people aged over 65 fall every year, often with devastating consequences for their quality of life and at very significant cost to the NHS”, says Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director of Age UK.

“But falls are not an inevitable part of ageing - many falls can be prevented and there is much that can be done to help people who have fallen not to fall again.”
