Why the London Marathon is so important
The London Marathon 2017 is taking place this Sunday 23rd April and, as always, thousands of people are planning to take part.
For the past 36 years, people from all walks of life have headed to England’s capital to take part in the renowned 26.2 mile run and this year, the organisers are asking participants to share their #ReasonToRun across social media.
What does the London Marathon represent?
As one of the world’s most famous races, the London Marathon means many different things to different people.
For a lot of runners, the London Marathon provides a wonderful stage to publicly thank charitable organisations for their support. They may have had direct experience with the charity’s services or simply witnessed the positive impact the charity had on a friend or family member; either way the London Marathon offers them the chance to give back by raising funds to enable the charity’s work to continue helping others.
Reaching an important milestone
For others, the London Marathon is often a symbolic achievement to measure how far they have come after receiving an initial diagnosis and subsequent treatment. There are an unprecedented number of conditions which can drastically change the way a person lives their day to day life, but to adapt to that and come out stronger on the other side really is something worth celebrating.
In heart and mind
Some of the most touching reasons for running the London Marathon come from those who are participating in memory of a loved one. Hospitals and charities can often be pivotal in providing treatment and care for someone until the very end, so it’s not uncommon for friends and family members to raise funds for these organisations at a later date. Taking part in the London Marathon is a fabulous way for them to earn sponsorship whilst also honouring the memory of those they loved.
